Do as the Romans do as they say. It's always great to see the Coliseum to relive the feeling the Gladiators had entering the stadium. Italy never disappoints as we traveled from Milan to Pompeii via Naples and then to Lake Como where the likes of Richard Branson and George Clooney like to go and hang out.
Curriculum based travel gives some basis to where life takes you next. If your children are learning about the Roman Empire, you go to Rome. If they are also learning about Pompeii, why not see the a sarcophagus in person. Unfortunately/Fortunately, there were no slot machines at Caesar's Palace.

Naples – Pompeii
Circumvesuviana Commuter Train (No reservation required)
At Napoli Centrale, simply step off the high-speed train from Rome and follow the signs downstairs to the Circumvesuviana Railway station, located underneath the mainline station.
Circumvesuviana trains run from Naples to Pompeii Scavi - Villa Dei Misteri every 30 minutes, journey time 36 minutes, fare around €3.20 each way (Cash only). The final destination of the Circumvesuviana train is Sorrento.
Get off at the Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri station (the station after Torre Annunziata). Don't confuse Pompeii Scavi (Villa di Misteri) with the other Pompeii station on another Circumvesuviana route, or Trenitalia's mainline Pompeii station which serves the new town.
Walk out of Pompeii Scavi - Villa Dei Misteri station, and the main entrance to the ruins is across the road a hundred yards to your right.
Hop on the Circumvesuviana Railway, every 30 minutes between Naples, Herculaneum, Pompeii & Sorrento.
Outside Pompeii Scavi - Villa Dei Misteri station, the entrance to the ruins is across the road and to the right.

How to get there: It's around 3.3 kilometers from Milan's central railway station (Milano Centrale) to the church of Santa Maria dell Grazie. It will take the best part of an hour to walk from the central station to view the Last Supper. To be blunt, don't bother. Milan is not Rome or Florence and does not repay strolling in the way that those cities do. Sure, you could take a cab, but the Metropolitana, Milan's underground railway system, is fast, cheap and efficient. From the central rail station - 'Centrale FS' - you need to take the south-bound green line, the 'Metropolitana Linea 2' and get off at the Cadorna stop, 'Cadorna FN'. Any and all south-bound trains on this line will stop at Cadorna, so jump on the first one. The station mentioned on the signs, and on the front of the train, will be the ultimate destination - usually the last stop on the line. If you're coming from elsewhere in the city then note that you can also get to the church on the red line, 'Metropolitana Linea 1', and you'll be alighting at the 'Conciliazione' stop.
Tour Meeting Place: The meeting point for this tour is outside the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, to the west of the center of Milan. Your guide will be waiting outside the church with a 'Tickitaly' sign. He or she will have your tickets waiting (you will NOT be able to collect them at the ticket desk, in other words - only from our guide).
Attire: Clothes that do not leave your shoulders/arms or legs above the knee bare. No shorts, short skirts, sleeveless shirts or bare shoulders.
